Day 32: 1 month, 5 hours since last cigarette

My car broke down.. I’m dieting, I’ve been going a bit crazy lately.. but after the first few minutes of a craving, it’s OK.

It’s very odd… I sit here and hear all of these stats…

“8 out of 10 people who quit smoking go back within the forst year.”

Ew. Camille, I got your comment. Thanks for reading! I hope this has helped you thus far! The purpose of my post from here on will be to explain my method of quitting and why I feel it has been the best for me thus far.

I quit COLD TURKEY. I just quit. Stopped completely. Never went back to it. E, my Fiancee, quit by the WEENING OFF method. She has been quit for around 2 weeks now. I’m proud of her.

The patch method is very scary, as your body is still remaining addicted to the nicotine. The day that you take that patch off, it’ll be a little hairy. I actually recommend just taking the patch off now. It’s mind over matter… You’ll be able to do it!

    I may have written to you before because I seem to remember a guy who was quitting for his wedding… I’ll be quit 2 years Feb 2007.

    I have to take issue with your comments about quitting using the patches. I have nothing against quitting cold turkey (except why suffer so much?). I used the patches to quit as well as participated in a program attached to a hospital. I now facilitate the support group for quitters in that program.

    Bearing in mind that it’s different for everyone, It’s NOT hairy when you finally finish with the patches. You have weened yourself down to such a little bit of nicotine that you feel pretty good.

    I used the patches in conjunction with the hospital program run by nurse practitioners and the one thing they promised me at the beginning of my quit was that they could keep me comfortable. God, when I heard that I thought “well, maybe I have a chance!” And I did have a real good chance. There are a load of tips and strategies that I learned through the program along with using the patches which helped tremendously.

    And another thing I can’t get with the mind over matter thing. Smoking is an ADDICTION. Some people may be able to quit using nothing but the statistics are very poor for success. Statistically the greatest success lies with using tobacco replacement products in conjunction with a support program. Here’s a quote from Wikipedia article “Nicotine Replacement Therapy”:

    “Findings from a recent Cochrane review of controlled trials testing NRT products indicated that smokers using NRT were 1.5 to 2 times more likely to be abstinent from smoking at followup than those in the placebo or control treatment condition.”

    Well, anyway, quitterswin, I wish you all the luck in the world. I do know 2 men (men tend to need to do it cold turkey) who have successfully quit using that method.

    I was getting back to you. i stopped the patch 2 days ago because i felt that i was feeding myself nicotine even though i wasnt smoking. yes they did help me through the rough time but i noticed my cravings were worse on day 4 when i stopped the patch i feel less frustrated. they do say it takes 72 hours for the nicotine to be compleatly leaves the body. i am looking forward to tomarrow. congats to your girlfriend too and to a smoke free family

    Congratulations on “white knuckling” it though. I hope you make it, but if you don’t, find yourself a GOOD hypnotherapist – one who is also a Master Practitioner of NLP to help you resolve the conflict between your conscious mind (the part that wants to quit), and your unconscious mind (the part that doesn’t want to quit). Given that habits and addictions are largely controlled by your unconscious mind, trying to eliminate them without working with the unconscious mind is like complaining to the bell hop (the conscious mind) about bad service in a hotel. Yes, you might be lucky enough to get the complaint through to the boss (the unconscious mind), but you are going to need to be very lucky, or do lots and lots of complaining. It’s better to go straight to the boss.

    The tobacco industry would love to have you believe that the issue is addiction to nicotine, because they know that you will fail using NRT and they will keep a customer. They know that as long as you believe you are going to have a hard time quitting you will have a hard time quitting, because the mind is very good at realizing expectations. That’s why drug trials need to be “double blind” studies because the placebo effect (people’s minds creating an effect because they expect to get one, even when they do not receive a real drug).
